RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
