2026 Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is also evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming seems especially strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
